Chapter Eight

“So?” Bethany said as soon as Grace answered the phone.

“Hello to you, too,” Grace replied, shaking out her jacket from the rain.

“Okay. Hello, Grace. Did you have a good day? Is your mom back from visiting your grandparents? How’s your Dad? Oh, and how did it go with Mr. Tall, Dark and Oh, So Handsome?”

Grace laughed. “I had the usual good day, thank you. Mom got back last night and Dad, as always, was delighted to have her home. Let’s see, what was your other question?”

Bethany let out a strangled cry of frustration. “You are driving me nuts, girl. You know very well why I called, why I’ve been calling for the last two hours. I tried your cell, the office and your house. Nothing. Where were you anyway?”

“We had coffee. Then it started to rain and so we decided to get a sandwich and wait it out.”

Bethany sighed. “That is so romantic.”

“And you are so easily impressed,” Grace replied. “I often think that you should do the matchmaking for the program and I should just handle the paperwork.”

“If I can match you with him, I’m more than happy to quit while I’m ahead. Have you seen the way he looks at you? Have you seen the way you look at him?”

“He looks at me the same way he looks at any subject for an article. Don’t mistake salivating over a story that includes Senator Harrison’s reclusive daughter with anything close to interest on a romantic level, Bethany.”

“That shows what you know. The man is definitely interested in you. He’s just not sure why. It’s really hard for a guy to understand why he’s attracted when you seem determined to mask any sign that you’re a beautiful woman. The poor guy’s confused.”

Grace paused in the action of emptying the dishwasher. “There is nothing wrong with the way I dress,” she said firmly. “Just because I buy good quality traditional pieces that last beyond one season…”

There was another pause before Bethany said, “Can we all say together, ‘Bor-r-ring!’ Frankly, and I say this with only your best interests at heart, you have no fashion sense.”

“Between you and Mom always on me, it’s like the two of you think I dress like a street person,” she said, appalled at how upset she was getting over this old debate.

“Hey, it’s not like that. A little color is all we’re saying. Could it be that you’re getting so upset because something has come into your life to make you think there may be something to this—or should I say someone has come into your life?”

Now it was Grace’s turn to issue an exasperated sigh. “I give up. Thankfully Jud needs to file his article by the end of next week so we can all get back to our normal lives.”

“Oh, you naive child,” Bethany said, clucking her tongue as if she were Grace’s disapproving teacher. “So, you had dinner. What’d you talk about?”

“We had sandwiches,” Grace corrected. “We talked about the article.”

“The entire
